Clinical Category and Comorbid Conditions (MDS Sections I and J)

This 1.25-hour webinar (the second of a 6-webinar series) will review MDS items in sections I and J used to determine the resident’s Clinical Category which directly impacts the PT, OT, and SLP case-mix groups as well as comorbidities that can further impact the SLP and NTA components under PDPM. ICD-10 mapping will be emphasized along with guidance on effective systems for ensuring ‘active’ diagnosis reporting in section I.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the factors involved in determining a resident’s PDPM Clinical Category
  • Identify conditions that impact the SLP and NTA components and how they are reported on the MDS
  • Develop effective systems to promote diagnosis specificity and reporting of ‘active’ conditions on the MDS
Presenters:

Eleisha Wilkes, RN, RAC-CT, Clinical Consultant
Eleisha Wilkes is a Registered Nurse and AANAC certified MDS consultant with over fifteen years of experience in long term care. She has served as a Director of Nursing, Case Manager and Resident Assessment Coordinator with extensive responsibility and success in driving QA in the areas of person-centered assessment and care planning through effective systems, staff development, and interdisciplinary team collaboration. Eleisha specializes in MDS validation audits, Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement compliance, competency-based staff education programs, and works with clients extensively to facilitate SNF/NF survey readiness including Phase 1-3 Requirements of Participation compliance. She has presented extensively on the Patient Driven Payment Model and nursing facility readiness under the new reimbursement system. She now serves as an RN Clinical Consultant with Proactive Medical Review & Consulting, LLC.

Kristen Walden, RN, MSN, RAC-CT, Clinical Consultant
Kristen Walden brings twenty-five years of experience as a corporate clinical and reimbursement nurse, DON, and QA Nurse with expertise in driving nursing compliance, implementing software solutions, MDS/RAC skill development, and systems improvement for Five Star, clinical quality and reimbursement. She specializes in teaching clinical problem solving and advancing quality operations for consistent outcomes.

All participants are eligible for up to 1.25 CEUs. Proactive Medical Review will report an equal amount of NAB credit for primary registrants for whom NAB #s are provided.
