In the United States, 25.2% of nursing facility residents receive antipsychotic medications. It is estimated that 83% of antipsychotic usage in nursing facilities is for off-label conditions and 88% is associated with Dementia, the condition specified in the FDA boxed warning. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched a new initiative March 29, 2012 aimed at improving behavioral health and reducing the use of antipsychotic medications in nursing home residents.
